THE BLOODLINE AND THE SUN

onouring two very different things is what today is all about. On one hand, we honour the role of fathers in our families; on the other, some of us will be honouring the Sun.

Today is Father’s Day, marking my 29th year being honoured as a dad. So, did my daughters lavish me with opulent gifts or treat me to a traditional, predictable slap-up meal? Of course not—that would be ordinary and boring. Instead, we paid a visit to Molly, their tattooist friend, to get matching ink to honour our relationship. I know permanent body art isn't for everyone, but it is definitely us. Thank you to my girls for the treat.
It is also a day to honour all fathers. I visited mine yesterday, armed with a stash of diabetic sweet treats. Because of our recent travels, I hadn't seen the parents for a few weeks, so it was fantastic to properly catch up.

Yesterday also marked a much quieter, but deeply profound anniversary: 19 years since Morticia’s life-saving heart surgery. Without it, she wouldn’t be here today. It’s a fierce reminder that the greatest gift we ever get is simply time.

The Peak of Sol
Alongside the dad duties, today is Midsummer—the longest day of the year. It's a sacred time to celebrate life and the peak power of Sól. Shortly, I shall be lighting a fire in my fire pit, giving offerings to the gods, and spending some quiet time meditating and contemplating.

Whether you're raising a glass, raising a fire, or getting some fresh ink—blessed Solstice and Happy Father's Day.

The spirit of the Urban Viking—and the occasional absurdity of navigating the modern world—lives on in my webcomic, Northman

  1. Don't forget Kirt, June 21st marked the 82nd birthday of Ray Davies of The Kinks. It was also the birthday of Benazir Bhutto - the cruelly assassinated political leader of Pakistan. She would have been 73 yesterday. It is a little sad that the sun has passed its zenith and we are now plunging towards winter.

    1. You are definitely a pub quiz champion 🏆. I too am sad the sun will now be diminishing each day but thankful of the summer sun we still have to enjoy.

  2. I love, love, LOVE the matching "father and daughters" tattoos -- what a great idea! And what a treasure you have indeed in Morticia, your shield maiden. I celebrated the summer solstice yesterday by going to a ritual and labyrinth walk. Luckily it was indoors on one of those portable canvas labyrinths, because it was absolutely pouring rain outside.

    1. P.S. Can I include your tattoo photo in my next tattoo post (whenever that may be) on my blog?

    2. Thank you, it's an honour to celebrate fatherhood and I am lucky to have my daughters. Morticia's surgery is a gift we will be forever grateful for, and I know she's glad to still be here to be a grandmother.

You can absolutely use the photo, I've sent you a copy without the border via email.

  3. I hope you had a wonderful day. 💗 I just read Debra's comment and I echo it. She is better with words than I, and what I will also say is that I really appreciate you, your posts and your friendship, Kirt. A heartfelt thank you for being here.
