RITUALS AND ROTATIONS

treus, our grandson, celebrated his first birthday this past weekend. It's truly incredible how quickly time has flown, and how much the little lad has grown and developed in just one year.

We marked this special milestone with a joyous gathering of family and friends, combining his birthday celebration with his naming ceremony.

I was honoured to be asked to perform the ritual. While I'm no stranger to public speaking, there's a unique kind of vulnerability that comes with sharing your beliefs in front of family and friends. It truly is a moment of laying your heart bare, especially to those who might not be familiar with your spiritual path.

The ritual itself drew heavily from the excellent 'Heathens of Yorkshire' Prayer Book, a truly invaluable resource for all sorts of rites and celebrations. I even had the privilege of receiving guidance directly from the author via their wonderfully supportive Facebook page – a testament to the community they've built.

I understood that not everyone present would connect with the ritual in the same way, and I made sure to convey that it was absolutely ok. Some might have felt a touch of discomfort or even intimidation, while others might have viewed it more as a spectacle. But in that moment, only one thing truly mattered: Atreus, and the outpouring of goodwill everyone had gathered to share with him.

The celebrations afterward were truly joyous. Atreus was in his element, happily moving between family and friends, all smiles. It was also a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with relatives, something we don't get to do nearly often enough.

Our chosen venue, Pad 12, a charming bar tucked away in a recently developed courtyard in Kelham Island, was perfect. As luck would have it, it's owned by my cousin, Dan, who incredibly generously gifted us the use of the space.

And what's a celebration without cake? My dear friend, Keeley – truly one of the best – outdid herself with a beautifully crafted and utterly delicious birthday cake. Honestly, I'd expect nothing less from her incredible talent.

Words were spoken, offerings made.
From the Gods, to the earth, to us.
From us, to the earth, to the Gods.
A gift for a gift.
