2402.09 THE LOST CELTS

I wanted to write this down as a way of clarifying what has been swimming about in my head in a way of making sense of it all.

My beliefs are sat firmly in the Nordic camp but I've always been very Celt-curious.

This probably stems from my love of the proudly celtic nation, Cymru (Wales), which has a special place within me. But it's more than that, I live in an area that was once home to one of the biggest Celt tribes in the British Isles - the Brigantes. The origin of Yorkshire's name comes from the old Brythonic name "Eborakon" which probably means 'the place for yew trees'.

Unfortunately Queen Cartimandua was loyal to the Roman Empire and the majority of the pre-invasion culture was lost. But it cannot be denied that there was a celtic kingdom that, apart from some clues from placenames, is pretty much lost.

There are two Brigante forts close to me, one in my home village (which is hidden away by modern housing) and another that is available to the public in the form of a park.
Then, of course, my love of the Celtic nation of Cymru. I've always been interested in the Welsh culture and embraced it. I love the language and customs and even try and pick up a few phrases on Duolingo. But recently I've wanted to learn more about the mythology, something probably shared with my lost celts. It starts with a few podcasts which has led me to buying a copy of The Mabinogion.
My journey down the celtic rabbit hole is just beginning and that's without connecting with the Celtic gods.

Hail Ceridwen
