WIGGO WIGGO WIGGO

radley Wiggins is arguably one of the most recognisable sportsmen and pro-cyclists in the UK. A multi-medal winning Olympian and the first britton to win the Tour de France.

On Sunday 23rd February, Rotherham played host to a British sporting icon, currently sharing his compelling story across the UK. Mr. C and I settled into our seats, eager to hear tales of triumph and tribulation from a life lived at the extremes. What unfolded was a raw and unfiltered conversation, a journey through the highs of glory and the shadowy depths of personal struggle.

The format, a probing interview akin to a psychological examination, allowed for an astonishing level of honesty. He laid bare the complexities of his upbringing and the relentless battles with mental health, moments that were undeniably difficult to hear, yet profoundly impactful. We were privy to the human behind the legend, a testament to his resilience, vulnerability and sometimes arrogance.

Now, the interviewer? Let's just say he was a bit odd. And the merch raffles? Felt a bit like being trapped in a weird auction house. The evening was a potent dose of cycling lore, a candid exploration of a remarkable life, and a thoroughly engaging experience.

Part of the experience for me was a bit surreal,  this all took place the day after I'd returned from York and the Viking Festival. The transition was jarring, in the best way possible. One day, I was navigating the bustling, historically-charged streets of York, a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and shared costumed camaraderie. The next, I was seated in a Rotherham venue, the atmosphere a stark contrast – a quiet hum of cycling enthusiasts, a sea of predominantly mature faces. My own attire, so perfectly at home amidst the Vikings, felt decidedly conspicuous here.

I'd like to thank my good friend, Mr C, for treating me to this event. We had a great night.
