IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE...

ur annual countdown to Yule was accompanied by a nagging worry this year. With my recent injury, the simple act of climbing into the loft to retrieve all the festive decorations looked deeply doubtful. That tradition—the festive preparation I look forward to most—seemed genuinely out of reach.

Thankfully, we got a helping hand: Rags's boyfriend stepped in, and the entire festive haul was safely brought downstairs. Success! On the chilly afternoon of 30th November, the tree finally went up.

For the last few years, we've happily been early decorators, usually trimming up mid-November. After all, Yule is the most important celebration in our calendar, and who wouldn't want to make that precious feeling last as long as possible?

With the decorations assembled, I immediately turned to my essential seasonal viewing. These DVDs are stored right alongside the tinsel and lights, ready for their annual outing. The collection includes timeless classics like It's a Wonderful Life, the chaotic comedy of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and the original Miracle on 34th Street.

My TV favourites are also essential viewing, particularly Blackadder's Christmas Carol, but my absolute, non-negotiable go-to tradition is the Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? A Special Christmas Edition from 1974. These are just the start; there are plenty more regulars I'll be watching over the coming days, but this is the core of my festive viewing ritual.
Morticia already likes to indulge in those transatlantic, cheesy festive TV movies—the kind that start rolling out from mid-November—but honestly, I find them too formulated. The storylines tend to be incredibly repetitive, and some even feature truly inaccurate and baffling attempts at a UK setting. I appreciate the effort, but I'll stick to my established seasonal viewing!

Meanwhile, our food preparations are well underway. We've already started buying certain items for the festive feast, meaning our cupboards are currently overflowing with delicious things we simply aren't allowed to eat yet! Our Yule celebration officially begins on the Solstice, and while there's a big, celebratory meal on the 25th, we generally feast for the entire period. Of course, my celebrations will be broken up by going back to work—I've never had the luxury of the full period off like most people seem to manage. So, for the next few weeks, our kitchen may be bursting with ingredients, but for day-to-day eating, it feels like there's nothing here at all!

If you're looking for more action and adventure once the Yule classics have finished, there's plenty more to explore and read across my other platforms!
