ife has a way of creating chores for us and then making it difficult to complete them. It can be hard to get stuff done when, suddenly, there’s something else that needs doing.
Last week, a weather bomb literally exploded in our garden. Stuff was blown everywhere, the greenhouse was devastated, and we lost a fence panel. Strictly speaking, the panel belongs to the neighbours, but since the house is rented, it’s not clear if or when it will be replaced. I need to make some temporary arrangements to secure our respective gardens, especially since we both have dogs. I do have some old fence panels that I might be able to use to fashion a suitable barrier in the short term. Years ago, the fence blew down regularly, but since the surrounding trees grew tall and wide, this hasn't been an issue for a long time.
Since my accident in November, I’ve not seen a doctor (except for the medical assessment for the claim) since that night in A&E. Although I have physio coming up soon, I wanted a professional opinion on my recovery, which seems to have plateaued lately. I made an appointment at my surgery—quite a while ago, since it wasn't classed as an emergency. I didn't know this doctor, but as someone who isn't a regular patient, that’s to be expected.
He checked me over and viewed my X-rays from the night of the accident. He then told me the A&E doctor was probably a little optimistic with his 6–8 week recovery estimate. Then, he dropped the "A" bomb: age. He said recovery would be slower at my age! I was a bit taken aback, but I suppose being over 50 means I fit into a particular bracket. He said the upcoming physio would be needed to push me over the line to a full recovery and that I shouldn't expect any lasting issues. I hope he's right.
The spirit of the "Urban Viking"—and the occasional absurdity of navigating the modern world—lives on in my webcomic, Northman. It’s a space where the same themes of authenticity and grit meet the dry humour of holding the line against weather bombs, aging, and the general chaos of life.

That's actually fairly good news from the doc. Best! -- hamster
ReplyDeleteIt could have been worse, really didn't want to hear about "my age".
DeleteI hope you have bought a lilac-coloured leotard ready for your physiotherapy workouts. Joining a ballet class should also aid your recovery.
ReplyDeleteI ride bikes so no stranger to tight clothing. 😃
DeleteOh yeah, get used to hearing that "A-bomb" dropped every time you go to the doctor from now on! It will get the blame for EVERYTHING, lol!
ReplyDeleteJoy 🙄
DeleteSadly, recovery is always slower at "our" age. I truly wish you all the best, as always!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm not a very patient patient 😂
DeleteWhen I was at the A&E with my knee (a couple of days after my fall, back in the autumn) the doctor who checked my x-rays said I shouldn't try any "longer walks" in the next few weeks or so. (When asked to define "long" walks he said like 3-4 km). In retrospect, it would have been more realistic to forewarn me that it might be months before I would even feel like trying... Alas no doubt age does come in to it. I hope you'll be able to trust your own instincts as well as medical advice!
ReplyDeleteI do push myself which one day will probably not be the best idea. So far so good though.
DeleteThis is shared in an attempt to make you laugh . I tried to order some food the other night via Deliveroo . My adult kids were here , no one felt like cooking etc etc
ReplyDeleteThe bank declined my card even tho I had approved in the app . When I contacted my bank I was told ( in a rather patronising time ) that the “ algorithm says customers of my age and gender do not order using this app “ , so the transaction was logged as fraudulent .
Not the best way to respond to a hungry 61 year old former Lecturer in Mathematics. Whether I continue to use the services of this bank is still under consideration
Hope your week gets better
Siobhan
Your teeth/eyes/feet, are doing well - for your age. Is there really any need for that added bit?
