1712.20 MY HIGHLIGHTER'S TELLY PICK (part 2)

So you've gotten through Christmas and you can finally relax and watch some TV. So here's my pick from Boxing Day through to the new year.

Television is such a massive part of the festive season for me. We always looked forward to the listings magazines but I fear this tradition may die with my generation as my kids always give me a sideways look when I go on about it.

Boxing Day

Captain's Pick: Big Fat Quiz of the Year (21:00 Ch4) - A massive comedy quiz on what happened in news and entertainment throughout 2017.

Special Mentions:
Dragon's Den (21:00 BBC2) - A special Christmas edition.
QI (22:00 BBC2) - Festive edition of the current series.
Al Murray's Make Christmas Great Again (23:45 ITV) - The Pub Landlord in a TV Christmas special.

Also

Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (20:00 BBC4) - Aimed at children but I think fascinating and educational for all occasions.

Wednesday 27th

Captain's Pick: Miranda Does Christmas (21:00 Ch4) - Comedy and variety.

Special Mention: Six Robots and Us (20:00 BBC2) - A look into the future as robots are placed with regular people.

Thursday 28th

Captain's Pick:  Still Open All Hours (19:30 BBC1) - A festive episode to kick off the new series. I have a soft spot for this show since it's filmed near my house (my local bus goes direct to the area) and David Jason looks a little like my Father-in-law.

Special Mention: What Britain Bought in 2017 (21:00 Ch4) - A look at this year's shopping habits.

Friday 29th

Captain's Pick:  Eric, Ernie and Me (21:00 BBC4) - A one off drama detailing the role of writer Eddie Braben in the story of the legendary Morecambe and Wise.

Special Mentions:
Vic and Bob's Big Night Out (21:00 BBC2) - Reeves and Mortimer return to their roots.
Eight Out of Ten Cats Does Countdown Christmas Special (21:00 Ch4) - Festive edition of the comedy word and maths game.

Saturday 30th

Captain's Pick: A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong (19:10 BBC1) - The Mischief Theatre Company return.

Special Mention: 2017:A Year in the Life of a Year (23:05 BBC4) - Director Rhys Thomas puts together a look at the past year.

New Year's Eve

Well what can I say? Apart from a couple of chat shows and Jools Holland there's fuck all on. A real poor show on all the TV companies. Guess you might as well get pissed. Happy New Year.

New Year's Day

Captain's Pick: Grandpa's Great Escape (18:55 BBC1) - Adaptation of David Walliams' book.

Special Mention: Mrs Brown's Boys (22:00 BBC1) - Second special edition.

On a side note BBC4 are having a Queen night - I'll probably go with that.

So that's it, my Christmas TV roundup for another year. I have to say the fayre this year is pretty shit. I know everyone (including me) will probably record everything onto DVRs and watch at their leisure. I'm not sure how this will change Christmas TV in the future but I hope the selection improves on this year's offering.
