Now I know what you're all going to say, "he doesn't look old enough" but it's true. From today my eldest daughter is 21 years old. It's her birthday!
Now cast your minds back to 1996. In the year that Take That split up and the Spice Girls emerged, the year of royal divorces and UK's disastrous effort in the Atlanta Olympics. The year that Dolly the clone sheep was successfully created.
On this very day Nelson Mandela was visiting the UK and Fugees - Killing Me Softly was number 1 in the chart. It was a sunny day, hot even by July standards. I was a different man back then, like Doctor Who (and I'm sure my children won't mind me making such an analogy) I believe that everyone goes through a number of 'regenerations' in their life. Today was going to be the end of a week of hell for us. Morticia and me had had a nasty experience with one of the consultants which had caused a number of issues. Anyway, today was the day that our first born daughter was literally dragged kicking and screaming into the world (the same happens to get her out of bed in the morning even now).
It's been a long and sometimes difficult road to today. But there has been quite a bit of fun along the way. She can be difficult and mardy, she obsesses about things in a funny old way but she's also thoughtful and caring. She's got the intelligence to go far if she believes in herself like we believe in her.
On this day, a very special day, I wish my Harley a very happy birthday and I hope she has a wonderful future ahead of her and that I get to watch her journey as a proper grown up.
